This armed American schooner was designed by W. Doughty c.1815, and measured 56.8’ in length, 17’ beam, 6’ depth, weighing 51 tons. Sailing as a privateer under government commission, she was ordered to attack vessels of nations with which America was in a state of war. Alert represents a typical Baltimore clipper design, which was highly successful both in speed and seaworthiness. This type of vessel was built throughout the Atlantic Coast. The model is constructed on a solid-hull, lift method, with built-up bulwarks, and laid deck. She carries one center-mounted gun, her hull is copper-sheathed, and she is authentically painted with red interior bulwarks and natural-finish hull. Mounted on a mahogany baseboard with inlaid satinwood crossbanding, glazed cover trimmed in brass.
