This fine realistic waterline scene depicts AMETHYST , a modified Black Swan Class naval sloop, built by Scotts & Stephen and launched July 5, 1943. The Black Swan s were built in response to WWII German U-boat threat, but AMETHYST saw her most notable action in post-war China, fighting her way out of the Yangtze River under heavy fire from Chinese Communist batteries. The waterline model is shown passing a river junk and is constructed of a solid wood hull with superstructure of brass and tin plating over wood. It shows all classic deck gear, armament, and fittings per period. It is realistically painted per the China Station scheme and includes a British ensign draped over its topsides. Mounted in a custom fitted mahogany display with inner raised plinth, glazed cover trimmed in brass, and two brass engraved name plaques.
