Built for speed, strength and firepower the British Revenue Cutter was considered the throughbred of the sea. From 1785 to 1845 they were the fastest vessels afloat, with the job of competing with the smuggling vessels on equal terms. The most famous feature of the cutter was the very long bowsprit, often measureing up to four-fifths of the length of the hull and could be moved in and out to increase the sail area.
