This very fine extreme miniature waterline diorama depicts H.M.S. Grasshopper, a well know English 18-gun naval brig which saw much successful action from Cartagena to Cadiz. She was launched at Hythe in 1806 and measured 100 feet in length with a 30 foot beam. The vessel is shown under full sail cruising on a port tack with a large 12-gun sloop. The models are beautifully made constructed with solid wood cores, entirely planked-over with holly. They are both authentically painted and decorated per their design and are shown with uniformed sailors onboard. Models include all appropriate detailing to their wire rigging and tissue sails; carrying numerous hand painted work-action figures, and all appropriate deck gear & fittings. Set in a plasticine sculptured sea with a custom walnut base molding, glazed cover trimmed in brass.
Provenance : Constructed in 1988, then to a private collection.
