State Barge

By: Donald McNarry FRSA

This formal and fashionable transport barge of the early 17th century were the type of small craft employed by the English government to transport Royalty, naval flag officers, high government officials, diplomats or privileged upper class on the River Thames. Traditionally these stylish vessels were lightly built with low freeboard to a length of 37’ with a beam of 7’, and would handle twelve fixed single rowing stations. These could be maneuvered quite swiftly and were generally comfortable and steady river-going craft.  The diminutive full hull model is constructed of boxwood, with gilt decorations.
