Royal Navy 20-gun, Sixth-Rate Warship of 1734
Full-hull model built in 1978 to a scale of 16' = 1”
Glazed case of yew wood
In this portrait of a portrait the artist has carefully chosen wooden framing, probably in pear wood, to convey a sense of the history of the full-hull model after which it was made, an original, contemporary dockyard model on display at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich . In his depiction of Tartar McNarry whimsically describes a vessel which could not exist in nature; her delicately billowing sails are partially set, nevertheless she has open longitudinal sections on the port and starboard sides and exposed deck framing to reveal details like the beautifully laid diamond-patterned parquet floor in the captain's cabin on the stern quarter deck. The 20-gun, Sixth Rate, single-decked Tartar was built at Deptford Dockyard in 1734. Her gun deck length was 106', beam 30' and burden 420 tons. She saw service off the Florida coast in 1740 in King George's war and in the East Indies between 1741 and 1751.
