Built at Norfolk Navy Yard, she was launched in 1892. Then assigned to the North Atlantic Squadron, she cruised the eastern seaboard of the US. In June of 1898 she was part of the Flying Squadron which annihilated the Spanish Fleet and helped to seal the doom of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish American War.
