This charming model depicts a cruising schooner of 38’ 8” in overall length. It was built for W. O’Sullivan Dimfel of Baltimore in 1883 for cruising on the Chesapeake Bay, and emulated the design of a British lugger from Penzance and the rig of a pilot boat. The design was recorded by C. P. Kunhardt in his book, Small Yachts first published in 1891. It was included in his study of yacht construction and ruling types of modern design practice. The small schooner had comfortable accommodations and was a safe and good sailor, often employing a large lug fore sail for use in light air. Her beam was 11’ 3”, draft of 6’ and had a displacement of 13 tons. The model is built via constructed of solid agba wood with the bottom being natural finish, while the top side painted white, and the decking of sycamore. It includes all appropriate features and deck gear, and rigged with bowsprit, and all standing and running lines. It is mounted via two brass rods and displayed in a custom fitted case of stained mahogany with a glazed cover trimmed in brass and recessed mirror. It also includes two brass engraved name plaques.
