This famous American Frigate was designed by William Hackett and built by Enos Briggs of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1799. Construction time was six months. The vessel, large for her rate, measured 141’ long, beam was 36’ 6”, and had a 12’ 3” depth in the hold. She was presented to the United States Government by citizens of Essex County, MA, and soon participated in the Barbary Wars under Captain Bainbridge. The model is presented waterline style, per as built configuration and showing 44 guns (28 carronades & 16 long guns), sailing in a moderate sea with a freshening wind off her port beam. Carries four beautifully crafted ship’s boats in the waste. Solid hull construction of boxwood, planked over with yellow cedar, gratings and other deck fittings, masts and spars are lime. She is rigged of wire with set sails of paper showing bolt ropes and reef points per practice. Fully painted with accurate deck gear/fittings. Model is set in a wood carved and painted sea, and mounted in a custom glazed case of walnut burl veneer.
