The Sandbaggers were small, flat, beamy centerboard sailing craft with enormous sail plans, to balance the crew of as many men as they could get into the boats. Each man had a 50-pound sandbag which he shifted from rail to rail at each tack to keep the boat from capsizing - not always successfully. Many boats had interchangeable cat and sloop rigs, sailing in different classes on different days. Big wagers were the rule in this kind of racing , and skippers and crews were mostly 'longshore characters,' professionals who sometimes settled the finer points of the rules, after the race, with fists, seaboots, and empty beer mugs in some waterfront saloon. Plank on frame model complete with all interior elements, seats, floor boards, framing, working tiller, adjustable sails, etc. Model is from the mid to late 19th century.
