With the ineffectiveness of the U.S. Navy’s gunboat class, Congress authorized the construction of two new 16-18 gun ships. The first of these was the ship-sloop WASP built at the Washington Navy Yard in 1807. She was designed by Josiah Fox as a fast man-of-war and at 117’, 450 tons would carry a crew of 140 men. Builtup plank on frame construction. Frames, keel, stem and sternpost are cherry. Deck plankin is orange wood. Hull planking is pear wood. Wales are ebony. Masts are birch and spars cherry, boats are pear wood.
